Johnny Weir's Flint, Michigan Media Blitz

Johnny Weir has had an exhausting few weeks!  He judged an episode of 'Skating With the Stars' on Monday November 29; flew to Australia and did three shows in Melbourne on December 2, 3 and 4 (including a major media blitz); flew back to the United States and did another episode of 'Skating With the Stars' on December 6; flew to San Antonio, Texas and did a show at the Alamodome on Wednesday, December 8th; and then flew to Michigan, where he is doing a show in Flint on December 11th at the Perani Arena.  This show, titled 'Holiday Dreams On Ice', is to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in an area especially hard hit by the current economic recession.  Show programs will be given away free to show attendees who bring a non-perishable food item to the show, and many young, local skaters will have a chance to skate with some of their idols.

At after three am local time on Friday December 10, Johnny Weir sent a Tweet indicating he had slept only an hour due to insomnia and was facing another media blitz. He also indicated he was due at a local Fox Station at 5:45 am.  Approximately an hour later he sent another Tweet indicating fans should tune into ABC 7 Detroit to watch him.  Two hours after the ABC 7 tweet he sent yet another Tweet; this time indicating he was in the Green Room at FOX 2 Detroit and fans should get ready for more morning madness!  Seven hours after the FOX 2 tweet Johnny sent his most recent Tweet, indicating he was heading to the Flint, Michigan ABC station and then to the first stage rehearsal of 'Dirty Love'!  Our poor, exhausted Johnny Weir!  Hopefully he got enough rest Friday night to be rested before the show Saturday at Perani Arena in Flint, Michigan!

Johnny Weir's Holiday Dreams on Ice (Article and WJBK Fox 2 Detroit video)
(Okay, there is something really odd and flukey going on here...  I had the WXYZ video directly below this one, and for some reason that video also became embedded above in the FOX 2 video spot.  So I deleted both videos and re-embedded them separately.  This time the FOX 2 video appeared in both places.  Thinking I had somehow mixed up the links, I deleted the WXYZ video and moved it to the bottom of the Blog underneath the Detroit Free Press article, hoping that separating them would fix whatever oddball thing was occurring. No such luck! As soon as I embedded that video it also showed up in the FOX 2 spot. Therefore I have decided to stop messing with both of them.  To watch the FOX 2 video please follow the link above or here (Johnny Weir's Holiday Dreams on Ice (Article and WJBK Fox 2 Detroit video); and to watch the WXYZ video, follow the link or the embedded video at the bottom of the Blog!  Sorry for the mix up, but I can NOT seem to fix it!  I also decided to quickly create a separate Blog Johnny Weir's Flint, Michigan Media Blitz (Part 2) just for the FOX 2 video, so whatever weirdness was occurring with the links would not happen.  So you may also click over to that Blog to watch the FOX interview.

SWTS Haiku II: This Time It's Personal (Misfit Mimes Blog with an update of the Bethenny Frankel saga along with other things)

Here is a People.com article that makes the off stage drama seem a little more benign that it actually was (according to another source who described it as Bethenny 'verbally abusing' Johnny Weir): Bethenny Frankel Confronts Skating Judge Johnny Weir

++++

There was, once again, a lot of off stage drama associated with Week Three of 'Skating With the Stars'.  I decided prior to the show I would not dignify the haters with more attention for their hate Tweets and posts to Johnny Weir.  When I heard about and read a few things being said Sunday afternoon I was tempted to change my mind; however I held fast to my determination to not give these less then exemplary examples of human beings any more of a forum than they already had.  My disappointment was heightened when Bethenny's partner Ethan Burgess retweeted a Tweet regarding Bethenny's feelings about the judging. I felt, and still feel, he should know better, just as he should know what it is about her skating that is drawing the scores she is getting from the judges.

My determination was sorely tested again Monday evening when we heard even more, not only from a segment of Bethenny Frankel's fandom, but from Bethenny herself, and from others who had observed less than stellar behavior from her backstage at the show.  I have a friend (and links to her Blogs are provided below) who handles this sort of thing much better than I do, because she does it with a sense of humor I do not always show when I am irritated about something.  I will leave the subject here with this wonderful Tweet sent by Johnny Weir at around 11:25 pm EST Tuesday, December 7, 2010:

Week Three Recap:

Skating turned serious this week with some nailbiting injuries.

The pairs this week each had to perform a particular love story for their Artistic Impression score.

Each week, there will be precise figure skating rules the Stars must follow. Throughout the competition, they'll need to perform specific "Required Elements" in their routine. This week there was a tough one:

Required Element: The jump. The stars are required to leap off the ice and land on one foot. The judges looked for height, distance, and level of difficulty.

We knew things weren't good from the beginning of the episode, when Keauna McLaughlin skated onto the ice by herself during the opening introductions. Her partner, Brandon Mychal Smith, had taken ill earlier in the day. In fact, when Keauna showed up at the studio, she saw Brandon on a stretcher being put into an ambulance by paramedics. A shaken Keauna, along with the rest of us, hoped that Brandon would be better and could return to compete in tonight's show, but that didn't happen. We all hope that Brandon gets well soon.

According to the rules, Brandon & Keauna were scored based on video of their last complete rehearsal, which was taken on Sunday.

Brooke Castile was at the hospital earlier today as well. During rehearsal, her partner Jonny Moseley accidentally tripped her, and inadvertently "bladed" her — cutting her finger with the tip of his blade. The cut was deep — to the bone, and, according to Jonny, it was quite bloody. Brooke received stitches and a finger splint at the hospital, and performed with her bandaged hand, still in pain. Jonny himself fell quite a few times during rehearsal throughout the week, some pretty painful, and in fact had never completed their performance without a fall at any time during rehearsal.

Over the weekend, Rebecca Budig went to the emergency room after a fall from a difficult lift with partner Fred Palascak. She landed hard on her wrist, which hurt and swelled. Luckily it turned out not to be broken.

And Vince Neil had a fall earlier in the week of rehearsal, injuring his back. He spent a few grueling days working through it.

Luckily, no one got hurt during tonight's competition, and there were some impressive performances and improvements throughout.

But after the judges' scores were combined with last week's viewers' votes, rocker Vince Neil was eliminated.

The Scores:

Rebecca & Fred skated a love story about "Tumultuous Love"

Technique: 25 points (9/8/8)
Artistic Impression: 25 points (9/8/8)
Total: 50 points

Bethenny & Ethan skated a love story about "Trust"

Technique: 17 points (6/6/5)
Artistic Impression: 19 points (7/6/6)
Total: 36 points

Vince & Jennifer skated a love story about "Romantic Love"

Technique: 16 (6/5/5)
Artistic Impression: 20 (7/6/7)
Total: 36 points

Jonny & Brooke skated a love story about "Star Crossed Lovers"

Technique: 24 (8/9/7)
Artistic Impression: 27 (9/9/9)
Total: 51 points

Brandon & Keauna skated a love story about "Healing Love"

Technique: 18 (8/5/5)
Artistic Impression: 21 (9/6/6)
Total: 39 points

The Standings (Week Three):

Jonny & Brooke - 51 Points
Rebecca & Fred - 50 Points
Brandon & Keauna - 39 Points
Bethenny & Ethan - 36 Points
Vince & Jennifer - 36 Points (eliminated)

The Judges:

Dick Button
Johnny Weir
Laurieann Gibson

The Hosts:

Vernon Kay
Tanith Belbin

As a special treat during this week's episode, host Tanith Belbin and her long-time ice dance partner Ben Agosto skated a beautiful new number to the song 'There's a Place for Us' from the new motion picture The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

By all accounts Johnny Weir was warmly welcomed in Australia, and felt completely at home there.  He did several interviews and was well received by the interviewers (such as radio announcer James Findlay).  The Australian fans enjoyed the shows immensely, as evidenced by their excited tweets, screaming at the shows, as well as twitpics from thes show and from meeting Johnny.  A few Australians even apologized to Johnny via Twitter for the weather not being perfect upon his arrival!  I started adding the Hashtag #LetsGoDownUnderWithJohnnyWeir to my Tweets until he left Australia!

Bethenny Frankel Fans Hurl Insults and Slurs at Johnny Weir, Round Two

December 3, 2010 Update:

This article Johnny Weir Doesn't Hate Bethenny Frankel (Even Though His Friend Jill Zarin Does) points out something all the loonies who are attacking Johnny for his scores for Bethenny versus his scores for the skaters that fell haven't acknowledged; both of them received lower technical merit scores from him than Bethenny did.  Interesting these fans have failed to acknowledge or notice this fact.

December 2, 2010 Update:

In this article, posted November 30, 2010 Bethenny Frankel makes an absolutely infuriating comment.  This comment appears in the article: "I am the woman Johnny Weir wants to be and he clearly has an issue with that,” she joked.

Some might look at this comment and think 'So what?' or 'It's a joke!'  It's not a joke, and it isn't funny.  As stated below in this Blog, Ms. Frankel hosted the GLAAD Manhattan 2010 event, and is considered a spokesperson for the organization.  In fact, she appears on the GLAAD.org website on the page for the GLAAD Manhattan event.  Ms. Frankel knows, or should know, through her association with GLAAD how hurtful comments such as her flippant remark can be.  Johnny Weir is NOT a woman, he is a man.  Whatever his sexual orientation is or his not, he clearly identifies himself as a man and has said so repeatedly.  For someone in Ms. Frankel's position to make a remark like this one and then try to pass it off as a joke is unfortunate, sad and hurtful to a great many people.  When Ms. Frankel was told repeatedly (and she can not say she wasn't, she has answered Tweets from fans posted in the same Twitter stream as the ones informing her of what was going on, as well as posts on her Facebook page) about the attacks on Weir and did not make any comment whatsoever, I thought her lack of response was at least partially due to stubbornness.  However, now I'm not so sure.  Knowing what she has already been told about the attacks on Weir (and to a lesser degree on Laurieann Gibson, Dick Button and some of the other contestants), for her to make this remark now is even more hurtful, sad and mean.

Hasn't anyone learned anything from the recent rash of suicides of young people who were LGBT or the attacks on gay citizens in New York City and elsewhere?  What is wrong with this woman?

Here is just a sampling of the lovely Tweets that appeared in Johnny Weir's Twitter stream after the November 29 episode of 'Skating With the Stars':

Prolific attack Tweeters:
LynnNChicago  (Publicly stated belief in conspiracy against Bethenny Frankel, writes Blog titled The "I Hate Jill Zarin" Blog)
AndreaDesrude  (Publicly stated belief in conspiracy against Bethenny Frankel)

The attacks against Johnny Weir began after the first episode of ‘Skating With the Stars’ on November 22nd. They reached a crescendo during and immediately after, the November 29th episode. They have now died down significantly; however , it is my fear at least they will start up again with the next episode no matter what Johnny Weir says, and no matter how good (or bad) Bethenny Frankel skates or scores. I noticed when looking at Johnny Weir’s twitter stream today that a LOT of tweets have been deleted since Monday evening; including a pile of them attacking him with gay slurs. In fact, despite the fact I saw a number of them Monday night, today I could only find one. Interesting! I doubt the people who posted those tweets cared enough about hurting Johnny Weir or his fans feelings to delete them for that reason; so I must assume someone suggested they be deleted.  (A friend of mine counted twenty-nine separate Tweeters sending hate tweets and insults to Johnny Weir after the deleted tweets were already gone.  This does not count the number of Tweets sent by 'fans' who criticized his judging, told him to stay in Australia, or told him he should be fired.)

Several of these people are following Johnny Weir on Twitter. Why? So they can harass him and jump on every word he says?  One person answered a question by a Weir fan as to why she followed him on Twitter with '...To see what he is going to say next! I follow several people I despise!'; as if being unhappy with a few scores and misinterpreted comments was a good enough reason to 'despise' someone?

I have noticed many of these people are heavily into the ’Real Housewives…’ franchise, and most, if not all, read the ’The "I Hate Jill Zarin" Blog written by LynnNChicago. Many of the attack tweeters railing against Johnny Weir on Twitter and Facebook both are not even spelling their idol Bethenny Frankel’s name correctly. I would say at least fifty percent of them spell her name wrong.

It’s ridiculous to accuse Johnny of personal vendettas, and raging against Bethenny, especially when you consider how many of them are accusing Jill Zarin of somehow arranging for perfect, Olympic caliber skater Bethenny Frankel to be harshly judged on this show. They are also putting words in Johnny’s mouth that he never said, and conveniently forgetting that all three judges are judging similarly. It apparently doesn’t matter to any of these people that they are calling the other skaters, as well as the judges, names (for example, saying that Vince Neil fell on his ‘fat ass’, referring to Laurieann Gibson as a ‘bitch’ and an ‘idiot broad‘; Johnny Weir as a ’snake’, ‘creep‘, ‘moron‘, ‘loser‘, ‘ass’, ‘idiot’, ‘embarrassing’, mocking Brandon Mychael Smith, and so on), not to mention making ridiculous accusations such as Weir’s being paid off to judge Bethenny harshly, against a judge on a figure skating reality show.

At least one Bethenny 'fan' flat out threatened Johnny Weir with violence (unless of course you can interpret a comment that they would like to 'shove a fairy wand up his ass', or that he should have a 'broken champagne glass shoved up his ass' as something else).

Several have praised Bethenny's skating partner for apparently saying the judging was 'F++king Bullshit' (he should know better since he's been judged in the past and should be able to see what is wrong with her skating himself.  Besides Ethan, I have news for you! Some of her fans are criticizing and badmouthing YOU!  You're next honey!); and I haven't seen a single one of them mention having a problem with Bethenny's 'F++k Johnny Weir' comment during the November 29 segment.  What is WRONG with these people? Why can they not see that what they are doing and saying is far worse than anything they think Johnny Weir is doing or saying?

Another thing that bothers me is why Bethenny Frankel, who is quite aware of what has been going on between her fans and Johnny Weir, has not said anything. She is a spokesperson for GLAAD, and hosted the GLAAD Manhattan benefit at which Johnny Weir appeared with her; yet she has not even opened her mouth regarding the attacks on Weir. No one expects her to be able to control her fans behavior, but saying SOMETHING about at least the homophobic slurs against him would be advisable and helpful. Yet she continues to say absolutely NOTHING and lets it all continue unabated! It obviously was not her who encouraged her ‘fans’ who hurled homophobic slurs at Weir to delete them, she hasn’t said a word other than to jab the judges and promote herself.

A number of gay references on Facebook on the 'Skating With the Stars' page have already been flagged, and at least some of them removed by Facebook.  Personally I flagged so many personal attacks on Johnny Weir in the comments on Bethenny Frankel's Facebook page that I lost count of them all.  (Referring to Johnny Weir as Johnny WeirD?  Please, at least be original!)  I also flagged some attacks on Laurieann Gibson, and a gay slur against Dick Button, as well as a few attacks against the other contestants that were a little too personal.

Truthfully many of the fans, while possibly over reacting a little to the judging, were not launching personal attacks on Johnny Weir or anyone else; however enough were that it was quite disturbing to me and should be disturbing to anyone.

For some (humorous) insight into why Bethenny Frankel is not scoring well on ‘Skating with the Stars’, please read the following article:
