Johnny Weir Wallpaper and Calendar at 1101.com

Itoi Shigesato and Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun ("Almost Daily Itoi News") abbreviated as 'Hobonichi' (the office of Itoi Shigesato), recent conducted and published a wonderful series of ten interviews Johnny Weir!!!  Johnny Comes to Our Office via their website.  They have now put up a section on their website where fans may download wallpaper and/or calendars with photographs of Johnny Weir and others.  A wonderful fan first alerted us non-Japanese fans to this unexpected treat, and then translated the instructions into English for us to use.  A twitpic of what to do was even included.

2) and upper --> with a calendar . lower --> Wall paper
3) Wall paper --> choose the size & click --> right click on pic of Johnny --> save it
4) do not worry. you can do DL ag...ain and again :)

The twitpic she included has pictures of what we should click on!

The fan also communicated with @1101complus, who later sent a series of three Tweets, explaining in English how to download the wallpaper and calendar.  You will find a series of eleven squares at the page, one of which has a picture of Johnny in it.  This is the square you should click on to download the wallpaper and the calendar.

Update from Itoi Shigesato Includes FOI Behind the Scenes - Windows Live

The above link is to my Blog about a new entry fom Itoi Shigesato on his website.  Mr. Shigesato wrote an entry on Sunday (Kyoo no Daarin or 'Today's Darling') in which he talked about his impressions of figure skating after he and some of his 'crew' attended Fantasy On Ice in Fukui, Japan.  It was written in Japanese; however my friend Misfit Mimes with the help of wonderful Japanese fan Akiko Nakata, has provided a partial translation in her Blog "Today's Darling".  On September 15 Mr. Shigesato posted another entry about his trip to the Fukui ice show, and included a conversation he had with Johnny Weir backstage as well as several new photographs taken backstage at the ice show.  A small portion of this part of the Blog is written in both Japanese and English, but most of it is written in Japanese.

Episode X of 'Johnny Comes to Our Office': Epilogue

Episode X 'Epilogue', of the extraordinarily insightful series of interviews 'Johnny Weir!!! Johnny Comes to Our Office' between Itoi Shigesato and Johnny Weir, was posted on September 10, 2010. The interview was conducted at Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun (“Almost Daily Itoi News”) abbreviated as ‘Hobonichi’, the office of Itoi Shigesato. 思いがけず、というと、

たいへん失礼かもしれないのですが、
これほど、濃密で、親密な、
やり取りになるとは、
事前に予想していませんでした。

"Unexpectedly" may not be the appropriate expression, but we didn't anticipate their interaction to be so profound and intimate.

対談が終わり、
ありがとうの握手を交わしたあとも、
ふたりはしばらくその場に残って
おしゃべりを続けていました。
聞いている乗組員たちも
ずっとそれを聞いていました。

They kept on chatting even after they shook hands and ended the interview. All of us stayed there, listening.

なんというか、ちょっと、
名残惜しい感じがしたものですから。

We already knew that we were going to miss Johnny.

糸井重里からの個人的なプレゼントは
三谷龍二さんの木の器と匙、フォーク。
大喜びで包みを開け、机の上に
ディスプレイしたのは、ジョニー本人。

Shigesato Itoi had personally selected a gift for Johnny: A carved wooden tray, spoon, and fork. Johnny beamed with joy, and displayed them on the table for everyone to see.

"There's going to be a photo shoot for my art book at the rink the day after tomorrow. Would you like to come? We can skate together."

糸井が「滑ったことないよ」って言うと、
「教えてあげるよ」って。

Itoi tells him he's never skated before, but Johnny says he'll teach.

もちろん社交辞令的なことだと
思ったんですけどね‥‥。

Johnny was a graceful host. In between photo shoots, Johnny made sure Itoi and his staff were comfortable. He went to speak with the junior skaters, took pictures with them, and signed autographs. He was just fascinating.

あの、糸井さんにとって、
こういう家族みたいなチームがあって
夢をいっしょに実現させていくっていうのは
どんな感じなんでしょうか？

How is it like for you to have this team like your family that makes your dreams happen?

糸井 Itoi

あなたと同じで、
ぼくが何かを代表するなんてことは
とてもできないと思ってるんです。
だけど、チームでプレーするってことが
どんどんおもしろくなってきたんです。

I completely agree with you that I can't represent anything or anybody, but at the same time, I'm getting more and more interested in working as a team.

ジョニー Johnny

ああ、なるほど。

Ah, interesting.

糸井 Itoi

サッカーでいうと、
パスを出せるっていう喜びがあるんです。
ゴールすることだとか、
一人で表現することも喜びなんだけど、
誰かにパスしたボールがシュートされて
ゴールするっていうのも、
パスを出した人間にとってうれしいんです。

If you take soccer as an example, there's joy in being able to send out a pass to your teammates. Of course, there is joy in making a beautiful kick on your own or scoring a goal. Still, it's equally wonderful to have your teammate pick up the pass you sent them, and to have them eventually reach the goal.

ジョニー Johnny

それを分かち合うんですね

And you share that together.

糸井 Itoi

そうです。
それがわかるようになったのは、
自分が年をとったから、
っていうこともあるかもしれない。

Yes. Maybe I've come to understand this because I'm older now.

ジョニー Johnny

別に失礼なつもりじゃないんですけど、
そうかもしれないですね。
自分はまだ他の人を
どう信頼するかっていうことが、
まだよくわかってないです。

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but that may be so. I feel that I'm still in the process of learning how to trust other people.

糸井 Itoi

だから、ぼくがパスを出すよ、
どこだっけ、ペンシルバニアにさ。

Well, then I'll send out a pass to your home town in Pennsylvania.

ジョニー Johnny

ありがとう。
でも、いまはニュージャージーに住んでるから
できればそっちにお願いしたいんですけど。

Great. New Jersey would be better, because I live there now.

糸井 Itoi

あ、そうか（笑）。

OK. New Jersey, then. (Laughs)

ペンシルバニアにはたくさんの
アーミッシュが住んでるんだけど、
彼らはサッカーなんてしないと思うから。
アーミッシュは知ってますか？

There are many Amish people living around where I come from in Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if they play soccer, so New Jersey would be better. Do you know the Amish?

糸井 Itoi

アーミッシュが住んでる？
ああ、あの場所ですか。
ドキュメンタリーで知ってるけど、
あそこは、ちょっと、すごいところだね。

Is that where you come from? Where the Amish people live? I've seen them in a documentary. Wow! It's a pretty distinctive place, isn't it?

ジョニー Johnny

いま、客観的に振り返ると、
ぼくみたいなのがあそこから
出てきたっていうことが
すごく奇妙だと思う。

Yes, very. When I think back, it's very strange for someone like me to come from a place like that.

糸井 Itoi

よく、あなたがあそこにいたね（笑）。

It's unbelievable. (Laughs)

ジョニー Johnny

ほんとに！

Really!

糸井 Itoi

化石みたいな場所だよね。

The place is as if time has stopped.

ジョニー Johnny

そうですね。
ぼくは大きい街が大好きで、
ニューヨーク、東京、モスクワ、ソウル、
もうすごい自由な感じがして
好きなんですけれども、
やっぱり田舎に帰ると、
もうそこを離れたくないなって思うんです。
やっぱりそこに自分の根っこが
あるからじゃないかなと思うんです

Yes. I always love being in big cities. I love New York, Tokyo, Moscow, Seoul... I feel there is a lot more freedom than where I am from. Yet, every single time I go home to Pennsylvania, I never want to leave. I feel it's where I am. It's my place.

糸井 Itoi

なにかと、まったく違うふたつのものを、
いつでも同時に抱えているっていうのが、
あなたの生き方の特徴ですね。

You are always embracing two opposing factors in your life. It's characteristic of you.

ジョニー Johnny

誰しも二面性がありますよね、
白と黒、善なる面と悪しき面、
都会的なところと田舎的なところ‥‥。
両方を受け入れることができる人が、
前へ進んで行けるんじゃないかな

Everyone is black and white. Everyone is good and evil. City and town, it's the same idea. It's people who can accept both that can move forward.

糸井 Itoi

それは、いまぼくらの目の前にいる。

Exactly, and we're seeing that person right in front of us now.

ジョニー Johnny

賢いような気分にさせてくださって、
ありがとうございます。

You make me feel very wise. Thank you.

糸井 Itoi

偶然なんですけど、
あなたが裏のトウモロコシ畑で
はじめてスケートをしたころと、
ぼくらのこのウェブサイトがはじまったころって
おんなじ時期なんですよ。
12年前とか、13年前とか、でしょ？

Your skating career started in the corn fields, twelve or thirteen years ago. It happens that our web site business started around the same time.

ジョニー Johnny
そうですね、13年前。

Yes, I started thirteen years ago.

糸井 Itoi
どうだろう、その13年って、長かったですか？

Looking back, were those thirteen years long for you?

ジョニー Johnny
13年というあいだには、
時間の進みが亀の歩みみたいに
のろいなと感じる時期もあったんですけど、
いまになってこの13年間を振り返ると、
もう時間があっという間に過ぎてしまって、
どこに行っちゃったんだろう？
いつの間に自分は26歳にもなってて、
いつの間にここまで来ちゃったんだろう、
という感じがします。

There were days that I felt that everything was moving like a turtle. However, when I look back at those thirteen years now, it seems as though they flew by. I don't know where the time went, I don't know how I got to be twenty-six years old. I don't know how I made it here so quickly.

だからこそ、今は、瞬間瞬間を
大切に生きなきゃいけないんだな
っていうことも感じています。
若いころはそんなこと考えなかった。
そう、いまはもう、本当に
時間が過ぎるのが速すぎるみたい。

I learned through the years that you need to love every moment that you have because time does fly by. When I was young I didn't think like that. Now, it seems like it's even too fast.

糸井 Itoi
ぼくがもし、過ぎた12年について
同じ質問をされたら
同じような話をしたんじゃないかな。
If I were given the same question, my answer would have been very similar.

ジョニー Johnny
やっぱり、深い絆がありますね。

Like I said, we're like kindred spirits.

糸井 Itoi

Yes, but you have more time left than I do. It takes quite a while to come from where you are to where I am.

でもね、つぎになにが起きるかなんて
わからないじゃないですか。

True, but at the same time, you never know what happens next.

糸井 Itoi
そうだね、わかんないね。
ぼくはみんなに千年生きるって言ってるし。

No, you don't. Plus, I'm telling everybody that I'm going to live a thousand years.

ジョニー Johnny
ああ、ぜひ（笑）。

I hope so. (Laughs)

糸井 Itoi
ロシアにも行かなきゃいけないし。

We have to go to Russia, too.

ジョニー Johnny
もちろん。あと、日本にも。

Of course. We have to go to Japan, too.

糸井 Itoi
うん（笑）。

Yes we do. (Laughs)

なんか、すごくきれいで、
すばらしいところみたいですから。

I hear it's so beautiful, so wonderful.

糸井 Itoi
そう、もうひとつ言いたいことがあった。
あなたのドキュメンタリーを見て、
思ったことなんですけど、
あのなかで、あなたを批判する、
こんな発言が出てきますよね。
「彼は、私たちのコミュニティを
　代表していない」って。
でも、誰もなにかのコミュニティを
代表することなんて、ほんとはできない。
それを誰よりも表現しているあなたが、
みんなの前に立っている。
それがぼくはすばらしいなと思ったんです。

Oh, there's another thing I wanted to say. In the documentary film there was a person commenting that you are not representing his community. When I heard that, I thought that nobody can represent any community. The wonderful thing is that you are standing in front of so many people and not representing any community.

ジョニー Johnny
ありがとう。本当にそうだと思います。

Arigato. I agree.

この世の中に、なにかの定義なんて
ほんとはないはずだと思うんですけど、
定義づけたい人って、
たくさんいるんですよね。
すべては相対的で、
絶対的な決めつけなんてないはずなのに。

I think there is no definition in our lives. There are just a lot of people that try to make a definition. It's all relative, and nothing is absolute.

ぼくが代表できるのは
「ジョニー・ウィアー」だけ。
誰かについていくことには興味がなくて、
自分がついていきたいなと思うのは、
自分の魂とハートだけです。
ぼくにはそれで十分。
誰かに受け入れてほしいとも思わない。

I don't represent any community because I represent Johnny Weir. I have no interest in following anyone. I follow myself. I follow my heart and soul, and that's enough for me. I don' feel I need to be accepted by anyone.

それぞれの人たちがいて、
それぞれのコミュニティがあるってことを
認め合って、尊重し合うような
世界になってほしいなと思います。

There are different communities and different people. I ask the world to accept and respect that.

あなたがオリンピックの演技で
ぼくらに伝えてくれたのは

Is it okay if I asked you first? What is your favorite food?

ぼくはね、知ってるかな‥‥
好きな食べ物は、フグと、コロッケなんです。
フグって英語でなんていうんですかね？
え？
Sure. I like... I don't know if you know them but I like "fugu" and "korokke." What do you call "fugu" in English? Puffer fish? Okay, I like puffer fish.

あぁ！　あの死んじゃうかもしれないやつね。
Ah, puffer fish is the one you can die from!

糸井 Itoi
はははははは、そう。
Ha ha ha. Yes, that's the one I'm talking about.

ジョニー Johnny
日本語ではなんていうんですか？
What's it called in Japanese again?

糸井 Itoi
フグ。
Fugu.

ジョニー Johnny
フグ。

The other food I really like is "korokke". It's deep fried mashed potato with meat inside.

美味しそう！

美味しいよー。
フグは冬の魚だからいまはちょっとムリだけど、
コロッケはいつでも食べられる。
They're both really tasty. Puffer fish is in season only in winter, so you won't be able to enjoy it now. Korokke, you can find them all year, everywhere.

デザートはないの？
No dessert?

糸井 Itoi
デザートは、そうだな、いまは杏だね。

You're welcome. So, can we hear about your favorite food now?

ジョニー Johnny
わかりました。ぼくは田舎育ちで、
生まれたのはすごく小さな村なんですね。
だから、わりと自然な物が好きです。
まず、トマト。皮が薄くて、
中に汁がたっぷり詰まってるような
重たい感じのあのトマトが好きです。
果物はだいたい好きですし、
サラダなんかも大好き。
Yes. I'm from a very small village in the country, so I like very natural food. I love the kind of tomato that has just a little bit of skin, and the inside is so heavy from juice. I like other fresh vegetables and fruits, and salad, too.

糸井 Itoi
うん。いいねぇ。
My mouth is watering.

ジョニー Johnny
あと、牛肉が好きで、神戸牛も好きだし、
しゃぶしゃぶも好きです。
あ、それからハマチも好き。
What else... I love good beef, I love Kobe beef. I love shabushabu, and I also love Hamachi!

あと、Varenykyと呼ばれるロシア料理が好きです。
なんていうか、ちっちゃい貝みたいな形の。
Another one of my favorites is a Russian dish called Varenyky. It's sort of a small shell shaped...

糸井 Itoi
なに？バリニキ？
What was that? Varenyky?

ジョニー Johnny
うーんと、小さくて、汁気があって、
ええと、パスタの一種で、
なかにチェリーが入ってて、
サワークリームなんかがかかってて、
食べるとすごく美味しい。
Yes. It's a type of pasta, it's small, moist, and is filled with cherries inside, and you put sour cream on top. It's so good.

糸井 Itoi
デザート？
Is this for dessert?

ジョニー Johnny
うーん、ま、そんなような（笑）。
Well... kind of, yes. (Laughs)

糸井 Itoi
ふーん‥‥。
I see...

ジョニー Johnny
あのね、聞いてるより本当に美味しいから！
It's much better than it sounds, really!

あとは、なにが好きかなぁ？
あの、ぼくは体に悪いモノってわりと好きで、
アスリートって常に
体重制限してなきゃいけないんだけど、
そうすると、ピザとかフライドチキンとか
チーズバーガーとか食べたくなるんだ。
でも、実際食べると、想像したほどは
美味しくなかったりするんだけど。
What else do I like...? Oh, I also like anything that's bad for you. As an athlete I always have to be on a diet, so I'm constantly dreaming of things like pizza and chicken fingers and cheeseburgers. The funny thing is that when I actually have some, it doesn't taste as good as I imagined.

でも、ほんと、デザートは大好きで、
バームクーヘンも好きだし、
アイスクリームとかケーキも好きだし、
イチゴのショートケーキも好きで、
デザートならもう、なんでも好き。
I'm a big dessert person. I love Baumkuchen, ice cream, cakes, strawberry shortcakes... I love anything "dessert."

もしこのままこうやってずっと座ってたら、
そこの木を食べ始めちゃうかも。
If you sat me here long enough, I would probably start eating that tree.

たしかに家族の関係よりも深く語ってるね。
You do seem to have a deeper relationship with food compared to your family.

ジョニー Johnny
うん（笑）。
Yes. (Laughs)

もう何年間も、食べるものに
気をつける生活をしてきたから、
そのぶん、思いがすごく深いのかもしれない。
It's very deep, because for many years I had to watch everything I put in my mouth.

糸井 Itoi
ああ、そうか。
いまも食事は制限してるんですか？
I see. Are you still watching your diet now?

ジョニー Johnny
いまはちょっと制限をやめてます。
だから、ほら、いまちょっと、
太り気味なんですよね（笑）。
Right now, I'm off a little bit. So, I've gained a little...I'm a little bit fat right now . (Laughs)

糸井 Itoi
どのぐらいの幅なんですか、
その、太ったり、絞ったりの幅って。
What is the weight difference between now and the Olympics?

ジョニー Johnny
オリンピックよりも今の方が九パウンド、
四キロ半ぐらい多いですかね。
Between now and then, I think the difference is nine pounds. That translates into... four and a half kilos.

糸井 Itoi
そんなに！
Wow, that much?

ジョニー Johnny
オリンピックのころは本当に細かったんです。
もう、骸骨みたいだった。
During the Olympics, I was very light, like a skeleton.

糸井 Itoi
いまもぜんぜん太ってないのに、
そこから４キロ以上も‥‥。
You're nowhere near being fat now, but you were thinner by more than four kilos?

ジョニー Johnny
自分の体的には、細くて締まって、
筋肉がパンって見えてるのが好きなんですけど、
いまは、ちょっと口が閉じられなくて（笑）。
Actually, I like myself when I'm very thin and fit. I like my body when my muscles are all pumped and cut, but right now I can't close my mouth. (Laughs)

硬くて冷たい氷の上にいるときのほうが、
くるくる回れたり、
力をいっぱい出せたりするっていうのが、
とてもおもしろいことだと思うんですよ。
I like how you can be stronger and spin faster on hard and cold ice.

Johnny
ぼくは寒い方が好きで、
氷も好きだし、雪も好きだし。
暑いと結構ぐったりしちゃうんだ、
僕の髪みたいに（笑）。
寒い冬は髪もばっちり決まってるんだけど、
夏になると、ぺちゃんこ。
I love it when it's cold. I love ice, I love snow. When it's hot, I feel very weak. It’s like my hair. (Laughs) My hair is always nice in the winter, but not in the summer. In the summer my hair goes flat.

（笑）

Itoi
だからロシアが好きなのかな。
Is that why you like Russia so much?

Johnny
それもあると思います（笑）。
That’s part of the reason, yes. (Laughs)

Itoi
あなたが、ロシアが好きだっていう話と
日本が好きだっていう話と
それからプリンが好きだって話と
３つぼくは知ってるんだけども。
There are a few things that I know about you. I know that you like Russia, Japan, and also custard puddings.

Johnny
（笑）

Itoi
それぞれ好きな理由を一口で言うと？
Can you tell us a little bit about the reason why you like each of them?

Johnny
じゃあ‥‥順番に行きます。
Okay... let me do this in pieces.

All
（笑）
(Laughter)

Johnny
そう、ロシアはインスピレーションの源なんです。
もうずいぶん小さいときからずっとそうなんですが、
アメリカ人なので大人たちがソ連のことを
敵として非常に悪く言うのを聞いて育ったんです。
なぜよその国のことをそんなに悪く言うんだろう？
って思ったのが、ぼくの興味の発端でした。
Russia has been a big inspiration for me since I was really young. I'm American so I was always hearing adults saying bad things about Russia, about the Soviet Union. It made me wonder why they were talking badly about another country. That was the beginning.

あの、ぼくは、ペンシルバニアの
小さな村の出身なんですが、
小学校一年生くらいのときに、
学校の図書室に『ロシアとその周辺国』
っていう本があって、もうそれを見て夢中になって、
それこそツァー（皇帝）のこと、
アナスタシアのこと、その文字、全部夢中になって。
で、文字もそれを見て覚えてしまったんです。
I'm from a very, very small village in Pennsylvania, and around first grade I found a book in the school library titled “Russia and Her States.”  I was just fascinated by it, about the Czars, Anastasia, the stories, everything. I loved it so much I taught myself how to draw the Russian alphabet.

その後、スケート選手になって、
ロシアの選手育成のシステムというのを知り、
非常に感心しました。
それで、実際にロシアにも行ったんですが、
そこには予想外のこともありました。
As I grew older and became a figure skater, I learned of the Russian system of training athletes, and was very inspired by it. Then I visited Russia, and the experience was something that I totally didn't expect.

まず、ロシアの空港に着いたんですけど
空港はほんとうにひどくて、
ろくに手入れもされてなくて‥‥
I arrived at the airport, which was very old and rundown.

Itoi
知ってる。
I know, I've been there.

Johnny
あ、知ってる（笑）？
Oh, have you? (Laughs)

もう軍とかがそこを
行進してきそうな感じなんですけども、
フッと横を見ると、身長百八十センチぐらいの
ものすごいロシア美人が毛皮を着て、
ダイヤをギラギラつけて立ってるわけです。
そのギャップがまたおもしろくて‥‥。
インスピレーションをかきたてられるし、
よくやるよなぁとも思うし。
The airport looked as though the red army would walk through any minute. And then, to my right was a six foot tall Russian bombshell in full fur and diamonds. This situation was just so funny to see. It was very inspiring to me, very artful...

たぶん、前世はロシア人だったんじゃないかな
と思うくらい。ロシア語もしゃべれるし、
読み書きもできるし、ほんとにアメリカ人としては
ちょっとおかしいくらいロシアが好きなんです。
だから、ロシアに行くのも大好き。
エキゾチックだし。
I think maybe I was Russian in another lifetime. I can speak, read and write the language. It is strange for an American to be such a Russophile, but I just love it. I love travelling to Russia. It's a very exotic place.

Itoi
小学校一年生のときから
好きだとは思わなかった（笑）。
I wouldn't have imagined that you were into Russia since first grade. (Laughs)

Johnny
なんでかわかんないんですよね。
I don't know why.

Itoi
ロシアを好きだってことを
あなたがあまりにも表現してるからさ、
ぼくまでロシアに興味を持っちゃったんだよ。
Now that you've expressed your interests so strongly, you made me interested in Russia.

All
（笑）

Johnny
一緒に行きましょうか
We'll go together.

Itoi
だって、それまでに知ってるロシアは
まさに空港だけだったからね。
The only Russia that I know of right now is the airport.

Johnny
（笑）
(Laughs)

Itoi
あのね、そこのトイレって
便器の位置がすごく高くてね、
日本人のおじさんが飛び上がっておしっこしてた。
The urinal was so tall. You see, the Japanese men had to jump up to pee.

All
（笑）

Itoi
本当だよ？
It’s true!

Johnny
わかる、僕も背が高くないから、わかる。
Yes I know. I'm not a tall person either. I've been there. I'm with you.

Itoi
そういうことだけがロシアだと思ってたよ。
So far, that's the only impression I have of Russia.

Johnny
ＯＫ、一緒に行って、その印象を変えましょうよ。
Alright, we'll go together and change that.

Itoi
うん。いや、とても興味を持ちましたよ。本当に。
That sounds great. Seriously, I'm truly interested in Russia now.

Itoi

ドキュメンタリーのＤＶＤを２回見たんですが、
練習についてコーチと
意見が分かれる場面がありますよね。
「もっと練習さえしてくれれば、
　上位が狙えるのに‥‥」
ってコーチは言うんだけど、
あなたは練習場を出て行ってしまう。
でも、我慢して、練習して得るものと、
我慢しないで、よくわかんないけれども、
ずっとさまよって、帰ってきたときに
得ているなにかを比べると、
我慢せずにさまよったことで
得ているもののほうが
大きかったっていうふうに見えたんですね。
I saw your documentary DVD twice. There was a scene where you and your coach disagree. Your coach tells you that you can place higher if you practice more, but you leave the rink. You could have restrained yourself and continued practicing, but you let yourself go. I thought that you had gained much more by letting yourself go, and then coming back after you had struggled on your own outside the rink, than what you might have gained by staying and practicing more.

Johnny
あのドキュメンタリーを撮っていたころは
じつは選手として最悪の時期で、
自分には特別な才能があるって知りながら
練習をサボってしまう自分っていうのもいて、
撮影されたものを後で見返しながら、
あそこでもう一日練習してれば、
あそこでもう一回ジャンプをやってれば、
と思ったりもしました。
本当のアスリートであれば、
両足が折れても戦うのがベストなんです。
ただ、一方で、アーティストとしては、
やっぱり、そのときに
インスピレーションがなかったら、
練習を重ねても意味がない。
もちろん葛藤はありますけれど、
あのアスリートとしてつらい時期に、
自分はどちらかというと
よりインスピレーションの方を
重視してきたんだなと思っています。
During the filming of the documentary was a very difficult time for me. It was probably the worst period of my career as a figure skater. I know that I have a special talent, but I can also be lazy. When I watched the documentary I would think, “if I would’ve practiced one more day” or “if I would’ve done one more jump.” For a real athlete, it’s best to fight even if you have two broken legs. But for an artist, there’s no point in practicing if you’re not inspired. My emphasis was always more for the inspiration even during those athletic difficulties.

Itoi
すでに何度もそういうことを考えて
しゃべってらっしゃるように思えますね。
I can see that you’ve been thinking about this over and over again. Have you already discussed this many times?

Johnny
いや、そんなことないですよ。
ぼくはなるべく、ひとつの問題を
考えすぎないようにしているんです。
フィギュアスケートというスポーツでは
なにをどんなふうに言うか、
ということについては
けっこうお約束があるんですけど、
それには従わないようにしてます。
自分のことについてはよい面も悪い面も、
明確な考えがありますから、
それをストレートに
表現すればいいと思っています。
No. I never take myself too seriously. There are understandings in my sport as to what and how to speak, but I never follow those rules. I have a clear opinion of myself, both good and bad, and I am very comfortable of expressing them.

Itoi
つまり、氷の上で滑っているときのあなたと、
ふだんのあなたを、同じようにしたい。
So, you seem like you would want yourself to be the same, both on and off the ice.

Johnny
‥‥ある面では、そうですね。
...In some ways, yes.

Itoi
「ある面では」。
そうじゃない面っていうのは？
Where would you want to be different?

Johnny
たぶん、生まれつき、ぼくはほかの人と
ちょっと違ってる思うんです。
氷の上で、最高の演技をするときはもう、
すべての感覚と感情が
魂（ソウル）からあふれ出してくる。
フィギュアスケートはぼくの表現であり、
芸術であり、絵であり、ファッションであり、
ぼくのすべて、ぼくの言葉なんです。
ぼくはそこで魂から伝えます。
氷から離れたとき、どちらかというと
ぼくは心（ハート）によって行動します。
ぼくにとって、魂と心は、違うものです。
魂は、生まれてからずっと自分の奥にあって、
死ぬとき最後にそれを感じるようなもの。
ハートは、「その人らしさ」をつくっている。
顔だったり、個性だったり、生きる力だったり。
氷の上にいるときは魂。氷から離れたら心。
そのふたつがあるのはいいことだと思います。
もしも、どんな場所でも同じ自分だったら、
飽きちゃうんじゃないかと思う。
I think I was born different. When I skate my best performances, all of my feelings and emotions come from my soul. Figure skating is my outlet, my art, my painting, my fashion design. It’s how I speak, and I speak from my soul. When I’m off the ice, I think I act more from my heart“. “Soul” and “heart” are two different things for me. The soul is something that is inside you when you are born, and the last thing you feel when you die. But your heart is what makes you “yourself”. It’s what gives you a face; it’s what gives you color. It’s what gives you vibrancy. For me, on the ice, it’s “soul.” Off the ice, it’s “heart.” It’s good to have both. If I were the same everywhere I would probably be bored.

Itoi
氷のせいだけじゃなく、
普段の方が暖かい感じがしますね。
You seem a little warmer off the ice, and I’m guessing it’s not just because of the ice itself.

Johnny
そうですね（笑）
Yes, that’s true. (Laughs)

Itoi
（まわりの乗組員に向かって）
いまの、ちょっとシャレ‥‥みたいな。
(To the staff) That sounded like a pun, didn’t it?

All
（苦笑）
(Wry smiles)

Johnny
年を重ねるにつれて、
ふだんの生活を送っているときも、
ひとと少し距離をとるようにしてきていて。
人に対して臆病になる、というのは言い過ぎなんだけど、
とくにオリンピックの時期は、
自分のエネルギーについて
とっても慎重にならなきゃいけないから。
年を重ねてわかってきたんですけど、
自分が暖かい場所にいるという感覚があると、
リラックスして、人とふつうにやっていけるんです。
どうしてそうなっちゃうのかわからないけど、
もしも自分が不快に感じると、
ぼくは人に対してとっても冷たくなってしまう。
でも、いまはすごく快適で、ご覧のように、
すごくリラックスして話せているんですが。
As I grew older, I learned to feel like I'm in a bubble. It's not exactly being cautious with people, but I had to be very careful about my own energy especially during the Olympic season. I found that as I got older, I need to feel like I’m in a very warm place to really let myself be normal. I don’t know where this personality trait comes from, but when I feel uncomfortable, I can be very cold. Right now I feel very comfortable, so I can relax and be expressive.

Itoi
ずっと、笑顔が絶えないじゃないですか。
それがすばらしいなと思って。
真面目なことを言うときにも、
なんかいい笑顔で語ってらっしゃる。
それって、誰にでもできることじゃない。
I’m also impressed with your smile. You have a very nice smile, even when you are discussing a serious topic. That’s not something everyone can do.

Johnny
どうせ一度きりの人生なんだから、
笑って生きたいなと思ってます。
そりゃつらいこともありますけど、
笑顔でいれば、あとで強くなれると思う。
人生で起こるすべてのことは、
その人になにかをもたらすと思うんです。
だから、悲しいときも、泣いてるときも、
いろんなことが台無しになっても、
泣いてるときも、笑顔で。
いつも笑顔でいることが大事だと思う。
If you live one time, I think you need to have a smile on your face. Even if you face difficulties, it makes you stronger afterwards. I believe everything in life is beneficial to you as a person. So, even if you are sad and crying, or when everything is a mess, I think having a smile on your face is important. When you cry, you smile too.

Itoi
うん、うん。
I see, I see.

Johnny
泣いてるときも、笑顔。
糸井さんも、そうじゃないですか？
Even when you cry, you smile at the same time. Isn’t it the same for you, too?

Itoi
そうですね。
True.

Johnny
泣いてるときも‥‥
ほら、笑顔で。
It’s like this. (Pretends he’s crying with a smile on his face) You see?

Itoi
うんうんうんうん、そうですね。
あああ、いいなぁ（笑）。

ＤＶＤで、
あなたのドキュメンタリーを見たんですが、
あの中にも、やっぱり
「みんなが見ればいいのに」って思うような
たくさんの要素が入ってたと思います。
I saw the documentary film of you on DVD. Again, there were so many elements in the documentary that I thought everyone should see.

Johnny
そうですね。
一方でアスリートとして競技をして、
同時に、もう一方では
アーティストでなくてはいけない。
それは難しいことです。
もちろんアスリートとしては
オリンピックで勝ってメダルが欲しいですから、
競争しなきゃいけないんですけど、
個人的にはまず、僕はより芸術的なことに
自分の喜びを感じてしまうんです。
そして、そういう僕を見て、
誰がどんな意見を言ってもいい。
That is true. It’s difficult to be both an athlete and an artist at the same time. As an athlete, you want to compete in the Olympics, you want a medal. You definitely compete to win. But, at the same time, I personally see everything I do more artistically. I want to please myself first. Then, everyone can watch me with different eyes, and make their own opinion about what I’m doing.

Itoi
あなたには、まず、こういうふうにありたい、
っていう自己が強くありますよね。
それはなかなか簡単にできることじゃないし、
誰にでもできることじゃないと思う。
I find that you have a strong self you want to express. It’s not an easy thing to do, and not everybody can handle it like you do.

Johnny
たしかに簡単なことではないんですけれども、
もっとそういう人が増えたらいいなと思ってます。
ぼくは、自分の意見があるのに
うまく出せなかったり、
あるいは、ちょっとそういうところが弱い人に
自分が影響を与えるなんて、
まったく考えていなかったんです。
とくに、子どもたちに影響を与えるような
立場になるなんて、思ってもみなかった。
No, it’s not easy at all. I personally think we need more people who can express their own style or opinion. However, I had never thought in my life that I would affect people who weren’t strong enough to completely be themselves, especially children.
Itoi
うん、うん。
Interesting. Please go on.

Johnny
自分が、若手のスケート選手や、
ちょっと変わったユニークな子どもたちと
その親たちに影響を与えるようになるなんて、
ほんとうに思ってもみなかった。
でも、思うんだけど、世の中にたとえば、
デビッド・ボウイとか、アンディ・ウォーホルとか、
レディ・ガガとか、
カール・ラガーフェルドみたいな、
すごく個人的なスタイル、
英語のよくない言い方だと、
「balls」って言うんだけど‥‥。
I never imagined I would be influencing young skaters, children, or even the parents of children who are a little bit different, or “unique.” I think it’s wonderful to have people such as Davie Bowie, Andy Warhol, Karl Lagerfeld, or Lady Gaga, just to name a few. Each of them has a very individual style… In English, we would say “balls”, but it’s so disrespectful to say that.

(Interpreter) 日本でも、おんなじように言うんですよ。
We have a similar expression in Japanese, so it’s okay.

Johnny
ＯＫ。じゃ、自分の表現で。
きんたまがついてるぜ、みたいな
ガッツのある人たちが増えると、
たのしく暮らせるんじゃないかなと思う。
Oh, okay. Then, that will be my expression, “to have the balls to do it.” It’s very difficult, but when you succeed you live happier than somebody who is closed.

Itoi
大丈夫、ちゃんと伝わったと思うよ（笑）。
I think you made your point very clear. (Laughs)

Johnny
ありがとう。

ちょうど、ぼくは最近、
「沈黙」っていうことについて
盛んに考えてるんですね。
で、いま、おっしゃったこと、
つまり、うまくことばにできない人、
なんでも上手に言えない人たちの気持ち、
みたいなものを表現することについては
ぼくの考える「沈黙」についての考えと
重なるところがあるなあと思いました。
I’ve been thinking about the notion of “silence” a lot these days. There are people who can’t or won’t verbalize their internal feelings. What you are saying relates to my thoughts on silence, about bringing those non-verbal feelings out from them.

Johnny
いまおっしゃった「沈黙」についての考え方、
とてもすばらしいなと思いました。
で、沈黙にも、なにか、音が、
かもしだされる音があると思うんです。
沈黙に耳をかたむけるとき、
ホワイトノイズのような、
波のようなものが伝わってくる。
沈黙を思い浮かべると、
何か聞こえてくるような気がするんです。
You’ve been thinking about silence--you have described it beautifully. I think even silence has a sound. When I hear silence, I hear white noise, waves. That is what I hear when I listen to silence.

Itoi
うん。言葉じゃなくてもね。
Yes, something, but not words.

Johnny
人はそれぞれみんな違って、
それぞれ自分の中に
たくさんの異なる個性を秘めています。
それを若い時は出せるけれども、
だんだん出せなくなっていく人。
若いうちは全然出せてなかったけど、
年をとって周りを気にしなくなってから
出せるようになった人‥‥。
ずっと常に自分の本当のところを
表現できるような強い人って、なかなかいない。
だから沈黙の中には美しさがあると思うし、
それをいかに引き出していくのか
ということについて考えるんです。
でも、沈黙していることはぼくには不可能です。
目を見ただけですべてが伝わってくる
ような人たちには憧れますけれど。
People have so many emotions and characters inside. It’s just finding the way to put it out. Some people can express them at a young age, and some people can only express them when they are older and they start caring less about what people think of them. It takes a very strong person to always be capable of expressing yourself, so I believe there is beauty that resides in silence and restraint. However, it’s not possible for me to stay silent. I admire those people who can convey everything just by looking in their eyes.

Itoi
ジョニーさんのなかには
とっても強い面と弱い面の、
両方があると思うんです。
で、弱い面を表現することで強く見える、
っていうふうにぼくは感じたんです。
ちょっとややこしい言い方だけど、
弱いっていうことを出しちゃうのが
あなたの強さなのかなって思う。
I think you have a strong self, and also a more fragile self. The way that you express your fragile self, or your weakness, seems to be your source of strength. It may sound somewhat contradictory, but your strengths reside within your weakness.

Johnny
そうだと思います。
ぼくは、自分が完璧でない
っていうことをよくわかってるし、
自分の弱みもよくわかってます。
弱いところは本当に嫌なので、
強くなって克服できるように
日々、がんばっているんですけど‥‥。
でも、そんなふうに言ってくれたのは、
あなたがはじめてです。
I agree. I understand that I’m not perfect. I understand that I have weaknesses. It frustrates me to have weaknesses, but at the same time, I fight everyday to overcome them. I fight to become stronger than my weaknesses. You know, you are the first person to make that observation.

Itoi
ああ、そうですか。
Is that right?

Johnny
なんか、糸井さんと深い絆を感じます。
We are like kindred spirits.

Itoi
その、なんていうか、
ぼくがあなたの演技を見て
とっても感動したってことは、
きっと何か近いことを
考えているんだろうなと思うんです。
The fact that I was so moved by your performance, I think, indicates we have something in common.

'You Weren't Competing Against Anyone', Episode Two of ‘Johnny Weir!!!  Johnny Comes to Our Office’ was posted today.  The interview was conducted at Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun ("Almost Daily Itoi News") abbreviated as 'Hobonichi', the office of Itoi Shigesato.  There are five new photos and a new video included with Episode Two.

Here is the text of Episode II of the interview (photographs may be seen at the website):

Itoi
(席に座りながら）
うーん、いいな、うれしいな（笑）。
I’m so happy that you’ve come. (laughs)

Johnny
ええ（笑）
Yay. (laughs)

Itoi
あ、この人は、隣のスターバックスのお姉さん。
She is from the Starbucks next door.

Johnny
(置かれたアイスラテを見て）完璧（笑）
(Looking at the served Iced Latte) Perfect! (Chuckles)

Itoi
なんか、変な感じだなぁ（笑）。
I’m feeling funny in my office.
(laughs)

Johnny
Why?
Why is that?

Itoi
ここ、こんな場所じゃないからね。
It’s usually not like this.

Johnny
今日は特別な日ですね。
It’s a special day.

Itoi
そうそう、特別な日。
Special day, Special day.

さて、ええっと、
どうしてここに来てくれることになったんでしょう？
Well, why did you decide to come visit us?

Johnny
えっとですね、
(糸井にもらったおもちゃを指して）
そう、これを、いただきに。
You know, it’s for this.
(Pointing at the toys he received from Itoi.)

All
(笑）

Johnny
もし招かれなかったとしても、
そっと忍び込んでこれをいただいて帰ります。
Even if you didn’t invite me, I would come for this and steal them from your office.

Itoi
あの、ぼくはフィギュアスケートについて、
あんまり詳しくないんで、
あなたのほんとうのすばらしさについては
きちんとうかがえないのが、
残念で、そして申し訳ないです。
Um, I’m not very familiar with figure skating, so I do regret, and I need to apologize that I won’t be able to appreciate your brilliance in a full way.

Johnny
フィギュアスケートというスポーツを
糸井さんがあまりご存じないのは、
むしろ、いいことだと思います。
なんにも知らない赤ちゃんみたいな目で見れば、
さまざまな芸術を、
新鮮に感じられると思いますから。
見飽きちゃった、
なんてことにならなくてすむし、
たくさんの知識がないことで
偏見なく観られるからとってもいいと思う。
I think it’s good that you don’t understand everything about my sport. If you have eyes like a baby, you can watch different pieces of art with fresh eyes, plus you won’t be jaded by anything. It makes you unbiased, and that’s great.

Itoi
うん、そうかもしれない。
バンクーバーオリンピックで
あなたのスケートを観たとき、
ほんと、赤ちゃんのように、
よくわかりましたから。
Yes, I think you’re right. When I saw you skating at the Vancouver Olympics on TV, I really understood it like a baby.

Johnny
よかった。ありがとう。
It’s good to hear that, thank you.

Itoi
(笑）
(Smiles)

Johnny
フィギュアって、政治的なところもあって、
すごくいろんな要素がからんでくるんです。
だから、ぼくにできることは、
もう、自分の演技をして、観てもらって、
ぼくの旅にみなさんを連れて行くことだけ。
だから、それが通じたとしたら、
とてもうれしいです。
In figure skating, so many things go into the result, and it is also very political. The only thing I can control is my performance in the way they can see me. I want to take them on my journey, and I’m so happy that you could go with me.

Itoi
あなただけ、ぜんぜん違うものに見えましたよ。
You stood out amongst others, you looked very different.

Johnny
衣装のキラキラだけが
違ってたんじゃなくて？
Was it just the rhinestones?

All
(笑）
(Laughter)

Itoi
なんていうのかな、
あなたは誰とも戦ってなかったと思う。
How can I put it...you weren't fighting. You weren't competing against anyone.

Johnny
ええ、戦ってません。
滑っているときは、雲の上というか、
もう、べつの世界で滑っていて、
アートを表現するには
そうするしかないと思います。
No. When I skate, I skate on a cloud, on a different universe. I think that’s how people can make great art.

Itoi
絵を描く人が戦わないように、
オリンピックっていう競技の場で
戦いでないものをあんなに感動して見たのは
ぼくにとって本当に驚きでした。
Yes, it’s just like painters; they do not compete. But, to see something beyond competition in the Olympics, which is the realm of competition, was very surprising and moving.

Johnny
ありがとうございます。
Thank you.

Itoi
これをみんなが見るべきだと思ったし、
こういう人がいなきゃいけないと思って
興奮したのを、いまでも覚えてます。
I still remember how excited I was. I remember thinking that there needs to be a person like you, and that everyone should see you performing.

Johnny
アリガトウゴザイマス。
Arigato gozaimasu.

Itoi
いえいえ、あの、こうして会えて、
ものすごくうれしいです、今日。
I’m very happy that I’m actually meeting that person I saw.

Johnny
そう言っていただいてほんとうにうれしいです。
It’s my honor, thank you.
